Men’s Health: 7 Ways to Naturally Increase Your Sex Drive
Your Health and Your Sex Drive Are Closely Connected
You often hear people say that as you age, it's normal for your sex drive to decline, and there's an element of truth to that.
However, the lifestyle choices you make can significantly impact your sex drive and your ability to perform in the bedroom.
For example, if you smoke regularly, you're not doing yourself any favors.
Smoking is detrimental to blood circulation, which can negatively affect performance in the bedroom.
On the other hand, regular exercise improves blood circulation, leading to stronger and firmer erections.
So you do have an element of control. So, let's dive into the main talking points of this article.
#1 Stop Watching Porn
You might be wondering:
Can porn consumption affect sexual performance?
According to research, the answer is a resounding yes, especially with heavy porn use. Studies show that frequent porn consumption can lead to a condition known as porn-induced erectile dysfunction (PIED).
Essentially, this means that individuals may be able to achieve and maintain a firm erection while watching porn but struggle to do so with a real partner, even when there is genuine desire for sex.
If you regularly watch porn, I strongly recommend educating yourself about its potential dangers, as the effects can be significant.
Here's what I'm going to do:
I'll include a link to the 'Your Brain on Porn' website at the bottom of this article.
I highly encourage everyone—not just frequent porn users—to visit this website for valuable insights.
#2 Prioritize Regular Exercise
Health is wealth, and movement is medicine.
When you exercise in moderation, it can solve a multitude of problems. Exercise is not only beneficial for your mental health, physical health, body image, and confidence but also enhances your performance in the bedroom.
When it comes to general fitness, health, and sexual performance, aim to be a "jack of all trades." By this, I mean you should strive to be competent in multiple domains.
For example, you have some guys who can deadlift silly amounts of weight, but yet they struggle to run up a flight of stairs.
So in the example above, the powerlifter is strong, but not physically fit.
The key to overall health and fitness, is to incorporate a balanced routine that includes:
Resistance training to build strength.
Cardiovascular exercise to work your heart and lungs.
Mobility work to reduce muscle stiffness and improve flexibility.
Additionally, when it comes to sexual performance, Kegel exercises are highly beneficial.
Performing Kegels daily strengthens the pelvic floor muscles, which can lead to:
Stronger erections by improving blood flow to the groin.
Better control over ejaculation, helping you last longer in bed.
By adopting a well-rounded fitness routine and including Kegels, you can enhance both your overall health and sexual performance.
#3Tame Your Junk Food Habit With the 80/20 Rule
We all know that carrying excess body fat is problematic for health and fitness. Well, it's also problematic for your performance in the bedroom.
To cut a long story short, it has everything to do with hormones.
When you're carrying excess body fat, your body is not in an optimal state and In this article here—I said something along the lines of:
"A good way to look at your body is to think of it like a car."
By that, I mean the fuel you put into it determines the performance you get out of it.
But what I failed to mention in that article is that you don't need to take this to the extreme.
You don't need to become a “health nut” because the key to any successful diet is sustainability:
Can you do this for the rest of your life?
If you can, that's a good diet and this is where the 80/20 rule comes in.
The 80/20 rule is a simple guideline to follow. It means that 80% of the time, you eat clean, nutrient-dense foods—think along the lines of rice, potatoes, meat, vegetables, and fruit.
Then, for the remaining 20% of the time, you eat whatever the hell you want. If you want ice cream, eat ice cream. If you want pizza, eat pizza—and do it guilt-free.
#4 Manage Stress for Optimal Sexual Health
If you've ever experienced chronic stress—where you're stressed out for long periods of time—the last thing on your mind is likely to be sex.
The reason?
When you're in that state, your body releases a hormone called cortisol.
Excess cortisol suppresses your sex drive, so it makes sense to manage your stress levels.
I'm going to share 5 ways you can do that.
Exercise regularly. At an absolute minimum, aim for 10,000 steps a day. I've mentioned weightlifting and cardio before, and these are important. When you engage in these exercises, your brain releases endorphins—natural chemicals that alleviate stress and boost your mood.
Surround yourself with the right people. Spend time with those who genuinely care about you. If you're hanging out with negative or unmotivated people, it's time to cut them out of your life.
Spend time in nature. Aim for at least two hours a week. Research shows that being in nature naturally reduces cortisol levels, helping you feel less stressed.
Use a sauna regularly. You know how relaxing it feels to sit in a sauna—it helps you chill out. Plus, it's a great place to meet people and strike up conversations, so you're hitting two birds with one stone.
Get regular massages if you can afford it. Personally, I've always found Thai massages to be the best. Every time I get one, I walk out feeling like a million dollars.
#5 Make Sleep an Absolute Priority
Studies have shown that men who consistently sleep less than 5 to 6 hours per night tend to have lower testosterone levels compared to those who get 7 to 8 hours.
This is significant because testosterone is closely linked to sex drive, making it essential to prioritize sleep.
To improve your sleep quality, consider the following steps:
First, limit your caffeine intake. Caffeine is found not only in coffee but also in energy drinks, soda, and chocolate.
Be mindful of your consumption, and as a general rule, avoid caffeine after 2 PM.
Second, unplug from technology in the evening.
For example, starting at 8 PM, stop using your smartphone, laptop, and television.
Dim the lights in your home to prepare your body for sleep.
Third, expose yourself to natural daylight first thing in the morning.
This will help you feel alert and regulate your internal body clock, hence helping you fall asleep easier when darkness falls at night.
#6 Limit Alcohol and Stop Smoking
Did you know that studies suggest regular smoking can reduce penis size in both length and girth?
This happens because smoking decreases blood flow and damages tissues.
It’s not just cigarettes—vapes are equally problematic.
Now, let’s talk about alcohol because when consumed in moderation, alcohol is generally fine, but regular binge drinking can cause issues.
People who drink heavily, especially beer, often develop large bellies and even “man boobs” due to excess calories.
Moreover, beer contains phytoestrogens, which can lower testosterone levels, remember testosterone is closely linked to your sex drive.
#7 Start Addressing Relationship Issues
Let's be honest:
If you're in a relationship with somebody and you are constantly at each other's throats, it's unlikely that either of you will be in the mood for sex.
I'd even argue that, alongside great sex, communication is the glue that holds relationships together, which I touch upon in this article here.
